About
Second Shift
SECOND SHIFT — A PROJECT BY BENEDIKT RAMMELAERE
SECOND SHIFT is a long-term art project built around obsolete, discarded and forgotten machines.
Pen plotters, dot-matrix printers, telephones, punch clocks, overhead projectors, telex machines and other retired office technologies are restored and given a new purpose.
Not as decoration.
Not as nostalgia.
- A pen plotter
- becomes an artist.
- A matrix printer
- becomes a clerk.
- A punch clock
- becomes a timekeeper.
- A telephone exchange
- manages relationships.
- A telex
- becomes a correspondent.
Some machines draw. Some archive. Some communicate. Some remember. Some forget.
Modern software and AI may operate quietly behind the scenes, but the physical machine remains at the centre of every work.
Its limitations matter.
Its sounds matter.
Its mistakes matter.
Its original mechanics matter.
Where possible, interventions are reversible and the machines remain as close as possible to their original state.
SECOND SHIFT imagines a place where the people have left, the equipment has been declared obsolete, but nobody ever told the machines to stop working.
They were built to work.
Nobody told them to stop.
SECOND SHIFT is conceived and built by Bene.
Each work combines original machinery, custom electronics and software while preserving the character and physical behaviour of the machines themselves.
